When I was just a little boy I’d watch a TV talent show
Where the grown ups poured their hearts out and was the only one to know
That only lucky legs are broken and maybe all the world’s a stage
Never show a gun on page one that you won’t fire by the end
They brought out a grinning monkey, his ukulele and a hat
And it seemed I was the only one who could see it for an act
My family were delirious
Tea was spilled and biscuits broke
But me I thought it mighty serious
The top of a steep slippery slope
We build a world inside our world to fill with our ideals
To reflect our faces in the water and show the souls we cannot feel
All that we should be escaping from
Hatred, wrath and tyranny
That in our ideal world we hold in such high esteem
These days I sadly seem to recognise
It’s only if your dreams came true
You’d really start to realise
How badly they reflect on you.
Now I look into the camera
Into a million glassy eyes
And I strum my ukulele
Through tears and jeers and compromise.

When they execute me, I’ll go to my death
With the smile of a martyr, whisper under my breath
‘Forgive these mere mortals; they know not what they do’
Dividing robes and casting lots can’t save myself like I saved you.
How green is my valley again streams sullen with ash
Not a word of sense to speak of but the loudest in class
I’ve been to these dead streets, walked through these dead towns
The ghosts have found their way in and had the signs taken down
Picking from the lowest branches
Singing where the air is sweet with song
I was the first child, I was the prodigal son
I’ve been aided and abetted in everything I’ve done
And to my little sister I say
You might work harder for less but you’re better off that way

I can’t remember your name or if I ever even knew
But every time I close my eyes all I’m looking at is you
Even the least lonely river still flows to the sea
They say it’s a hard door to open, it’s just never been closed to me
Prayed to her my patron saint
There’s a place to find a film to teach you every last thing
Everything you never knew you wanted shines down from the screen
We used to sell ourselves short now we give ourselves for free
They say it’s a hard door to open, it’s just never been closed to me
Prayed to her my patron saint
She said she’ll see what she can do
Not making any promises
She’ll see what she can do
She told me triumph and disaster
Have the same fool to blame
To not let one be your master
To treat both roughly the same

The lights aren’t on but someone’s home
Morning brings evening along
One hand behind his back
So why be right when everything’s wrong
When talking is alloy silence is gold, in light and dark
In warmth and cold.
Life is short, art is long
So why be right, when everything’s wrong?
He’s worth his weight in gold
So don’t put square pegs in round holes

An old man that I loved and I went walking on the bay
Steelworks stood behind us shooting fire into the sky
The channel flowed into the sea
We stood on soft Atlantic sand
His head not what it used to be
Blue scarf in his hand
You’d better learn to dodge a bullet if you’re carrying a gun
Self-praise is no recommendation but I’m as artful as they come
Fair exchange is no robbery
We stood on soft Atlantic sand
His head not what it used to be
Blue scarf in his hand

The Rope

There’s no good in all of us
Some places grass won’t grow
We try to fill our empty space with newspaper and silicone
Mama collect the rope
The laurel wreaths in all of us wild and overgrown
There’s no good in all of us
Some places grass won’t grow
Mama collect the rope
I am comfort
I am cold
Mama collect the rope
I am fortune
I am hope
Mama collect the rope
Sweet sister of mercy
Hold your brother close
Snake in the grass
Hold your brother close.
